There have been a lot of rumors once Chris Pronger was sidelined for the season with the concussion. No, it does not seem likely that the Philadelphia Flyers will be able to trade for Shea Weber or Ryan Suter. Not only do the Nashville Predators want to re-sign both of them, but the Flyers should not give up the type of prospects required to get them. A more realistic trade partner would be the Carolina Hurricanes. Toiling at the bottom of the standings, they have two solid defensemen in Bryan Allen and Tim Gleason. They both have contracts that are expiring at the end of this year, so unless they can re-sign them this is only a short-term solution. Both have manageable cap hits and could be had without giving up the farm. I would prefer Tim Gleason because I think that he is a more solid defender who will be able to eat up a lot of ice time. Of course, the one defensemen that would be best for this team is Chris Pronger, and even though Paul Holmgren hinted that he may be able to play in the playoffs, I just don’t see it happening. Let him rest and hopefully he is ready for next season.
