Less than a minute into the game, Philadelphia Flyers star center Claude Giroux got caught up ice and failed to back-check hard to cover Michael Ryder. Because of his lack of effort, Ryder scored the first goal of the game to give the Dallas Stars an early 1-0 lead. This was not a god start for Giroux and it made the fans wonder if he came back too soon.
Fortunately, that was not the case last night. After entering the zone on a rush, Giroux found himself next to the net when a blocked Jaromir Jagr shot came to him. Giroux got enough of the bouncing puck to put it past Stars goalie Richard Bachman and even the score at 1. Giroux had managed to redeem himself in just under 10 minutes of ice time. But he was not done yet. Giroux went on to assist on the next three Flyers goals, some spectacular, some just solid. Either way, the Giroux, Jagr, and Scott Hartnell line roared to life and gave the Flyers the convincing 4 – 1 victory.
Despite his four points, I think his best play was during the second period when he used all of his effort to back check and be in position to break up a two on one. That was the type of effort and dedication that was missing in the first shift that put the Flyers down.
The important thing last night was that there did not seem to be any injuries for Giroux, or any other member of the Flyers. Only time will tell if Giroux came back to early or not.
